ROYAL WARRANT, Certified Copy

H1990.101

Certified copy of the Royal Warrant granting Armorial Ensigns & Supporters to the Commonwealth of Australia on 19 September 1912. The document comprises three sheets fixed separately under a single mount. Across the top is the emblem - a kangaroo and emu supporting a shield, superimposed on two crossed boughs of wattle. "AUSTRALIA" is on a scroll underneath, and above, a seven pointed star on a gold and blue striped band. The first page of the written section reads "PRIME MINISTER'S DEPARTMENT, / MELBOURNE, 15TH JANUARY, 1913. / HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL DIRECTS THE PUBLICATION, FOR GENERAL / INFORMATION, OF THE SUBJOINED CERTIFIED COPY OF THE ROYAL WARRANT GRANTING / ARMORIAL ENSIGNS AND SUPPORTERS TO THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA. / ANDREW FISHER, / PRIME MINISTER. King Edward VII on 7 May 1908 had already assigned certain Armorial Ensigns and Supporters for the Commonwealth of Australia but King George V assigned the following Armorial Ensigns: "QUARTERLY OF SIX, THE FIRST QUARTER ARGENTA CROSS GULES / CHARGED WITH A LION PASSANT GUARDANT BETWEEN ON EACH LIMB A MULLET / OF EIGHT POINTS OR; THE SECOND, AZURE FIVE MULLETS, ONE OF EIGHT TWO OF SEVEN / ONE OF SIX AND ONE OF FIVE POINTS OF THE FIRST (REPRESENTING THE CONSTELLATION / OF THE SOUTHERN CROSS) ENSIGNED WITH AN IMPERIAL CROWN PROPER, THE / THIRD OF THE FIRST, A MALTESE CROSS OF THE FOURTH SURMOUNTED BY A LIKE / IMPERIAL CROWN, THE FOURTH OF THE THIRD, ON A PERCH WREATHED VERT AND / GULES AN AUSTRALIAN PIPING SHRIKE DISPLAYED ALSO PROPER; THE FIFTH / ALSO OR A SWAN NUIANT TO THE SINISTER SABLE THE LAST OF THE FIRST, A / LION PASSANT OF THE SECOND, THE WHOLE WITHIN A BORDURE ERMINE..." It is signed "BY HIS MAJESTY'S COMMAND / L. HARCOURT".
