EMBROIDERED PICTURE

H1989.1056

Embroidered tapestry of a deer with blue sky, clouds, trees and grass in the background. It is framed in an ornate plastic frame which is gold nearest the picture, then cream and has a gold border around the outside. The frame has a stand which can clip in to allow it to be propped either horizontally or vertically. There is a piece of white paper at the back or the embroidery. The frame is marked "DESIGN REGD 'NO' 913197 HONG KONG" and "NO 902". The picture is embroidered in silk and was the last one Mrs Violet Wilson made as her eyes were finding the work tedious when she reached her middle forties. She began doing very fine tapestry in silk in the late 1920's. This picture was shown for 28 years at 108 different localities and won 59 first, 40 second and 2 third prizes. It received second prize at the Perth Royal Show in 1963. Other prizes are detailed in the subfile. Some of the certificates won are accessioned under H89/1054. Other embroidery done by Mrs Wilson is accessioned under H89/695 to H89/700, H89/734 to H89/738 and H89/1057.
