TOILET SET

H1989.735

Three piece embroidered toilet set with nasturtium flowers mounted on green cotton backing, done for exhibition. Fabric is light brown and edges crocheted in light brown with two rows of line stitch in a peach shade. The particular silk embroidery thread used was imported from France until World War II. Mrs Wilson worked this set while awaiting the birth of her first child. a. Shape is roughly oval with large scalloped edges. On one side a brown bowl worked in filling-in stitch holds three peach coloured nasturtiums with trails of leaves and buds. Diagonally opposite are two stems of flowers and leaves. b-c. Each is circular with scalloped edges and have two nasturtiums in a brown bowl with trails of buds and leaves. In nearly 40 years of showing, the set won 4 championships (Perth Royal Show in 1957), 210 firsts (including Denmark 1954, Northam 1955, Tambellup 1956, Toodyay 1958, Perenjori 1959, Beverley 1969, Cannington 1971, Meckering 1975), and 65 second prizes (including the Margaret River show in 1969).
