(a) Wallet is embroidered with two strands of Clarke's stranded cotton on linen, then backed with canvas. It uses mainly cross stitching. The linen is mainly off-white and the embroidery blue and black. On the front flap of the wallet are two squares containing a lion. A border contains this and runs right around the wallet. The wallet is lined with crepe de chine (blue) and has two small pockets with a ruched top edge. A gusset enables the wallet to be opened wide. A press-stud closes the wallet. The wallet is basically one piece of fabric folded into three and with a gusset added. (b) A small purse has been made of the same materials. The embroidery is the same but without the lions. The purse also closes with a press-stud. It fits inside one of the pockets inside the wallet. The embroidery was done by Mrs Violet May Wilson and sent to shows all over Australia. It won a total of 43 first and 12 second prizes, including a second prize at the Perth Royal Show in 1966. Other prizes are detailed in the subfile. Some of the certificates won are accessioned under H89/1055. Other embroidery done by Mrs Wilson is accessioned under H89/695 to H89/700, H89/734 to H89/738 and H89/1056.
