ADDRESSING MACHINE

H1989.775

Former Kalgoorlie Mining Associates property. Maker's transfer on object reads; "Elliott / THE CAREFULLY BALANCED COM- / BINATION OF ELLIOTT STENCILS, / INK, AND RUBBER PRINTING ROLLS / IS THE RESULT OF FIFTY YEARS / OF RESEARCH AND COSTLY EXPERIMENTATION. IT IS THE ONLY / COMBINATION WHICH CAN FUNC / TION PERMANENTLY WITHOUT / HARMFUL CHEMICAL REACTION / ONLY PRODUCTS OBTAINED FROM / THE ELLIOTT ADDRESSING MA / CHINE COMPANY OF CAMBRIDGE, / MASS., OR AUTHORIZED AGENTS / ARE GUARANTEED FOR USE WITH / THIS MACHINE. LOOK FOR THIS / SIGNATURE ON ELLIOTT STENCILS / AND INK CONTAINERS./ H.P.E. Elliott". Second transfer beneath this is almost indecipherable; "Pty / M.....LS / LTD" Has "Elliott Addressing MACHINE CO / CAMBRIDGE, MASS / MODEL 190 SERIAL 27412" on a transfer near mechanism. Also has weight with "PLACE THIS WEIGHT / ON STENCILS / IN MACHINE". Metal is plated over entire surface. Addressing machine has foot pedal in centre and spring mechanism at right. Machine has four legs and wooden extension table which can fold down. Mechanism itself is a set of rollers; the foot pedal clamps roller at centre together, the stencil may be passed through rollers to set of two rollers at top centre underneath removable shield. There are two metal bars running vertically from weight at right side to aperture at left side; thus it seems the stencil is processed from right to left. Spring mechanism at right has spring loading to allow greater or lesser amount of stencils to be held firmly in place. This swings forward, has a metal bar descending at lower angle, perhaps to facilitate the emptying of spent stencils.
