DRAWING AND PRINTING TOOL

H1989.714

This a screen printing tool. The stencil would be glued on to the silk screen with solvent, the paint applied, and then the roller pushed across it. It does not appear that the roller on this tool was designed to touch the surface as it is held above it by a piece of rubber at each end. This tool appears to have been rolled across the screen after the paint has been spread in order to create a marbled effect. It could be used by children who may have created stencils from objects such as leaves. The tool consists of a wooden roller with a ruler directly behind it. The ruler measures from 0 to 8 inches on one side and 0 to 20 cm on the other. The roller and ruler are both attached to and make the fourth side of a metal frame. The opposite side of the frame has 5 arms attached. These extend back towards the ruler and roller but do not quite reach it. Each arm pivots sideways from its attachment to the side. At the end of each is a length of curved metal which pivots on a spring. Held one way they would inscribe a broad line in the paint. Held upside down they would inscribe two parallel lines. The result would be a marbled effect at adjustable intervals along the page. Information obtained from Mildred Clarke. See Subfile. The toys were used by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to Teacher's College in 1930 and joined the Education Department of W.A. in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classes for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She also made and purchased a large collection of puppets which were used as teaching aids. These are accessioned under numbers H88/613 to H89/307 (not inclusive).
