GAUGE, Mortice -2-

H1989.228.a-b

Wheelwright's and Coachbuilder's mortice gauges. Each consists of a large square-sectioned stock with 2 movable square pegs fitted into it at right angles. At one end of each of the pegs is a screw long enough to project through it. The ends of the screws have been machined to a wedge shape and point downwards. One edge of the stocks has been rounded, the others are square. The gauge is used for marking out the two sides of a mortice hole. So far as Salaman's DICTIONARY knows they are always homemade.
[.a] The stock is 1 1/4 inches square, the pegs are 3/8 inches. One screw is held in place with copper wire. The sides of the stock are stamped 'C C' and both ends '1933'.
[.b] The stock is 1 3/4 inches square, the pegs are 9/16 inches square.
