KIT BAG

H1988.549

Kit bag AUSTRALIAN ARMY WORLD WAR II (brown) long brown canvas cylinder closed at the bottom. The top has a flap and eight brass grommetts to allow a drawstring type rope to securely close the bag. The bottom seam has a canvas loop attached so that a sling can be strung from the top to the bottom to assist carrying. The name and army serial number of the owner are stencilled in white paint on the side of the bag "M V COOLANAN / WX 30821". This indicates that M.V. Coolanan volunteered in Western Australia (the "W") to serve with the Australian Imperial Force to be sent anywhere in the world (the "X") during World War II. As each stage began its serial numbers from one in 1939 the length of M.V. Coolanan's number would indicate that he joined up in 1942-3 or later. The Australian military forces used black, white and brown kit bags during both World Wars I & II and also in the Korean War (1950 - 1953).
