Ilgari Wangga (Sky Talk) Yamaji Art Centre Artists Sun 5 Jul 2015 – Mon 5 Oct 2015 9:30am – 5:00pm This exhibition Ilgari Wangga (Sky Talk) celebrates the customs, stories and beliefs connected to the Sky and Universe by Yamaji Artists, including contemporary elements shared through collaborations with astrophysicists. Over the last decade the Yamaji Art Centre based in Geraldton have been involved in three art-science collaborations with astrophysicists to explore each other’s different understanding of the night sky and the universe. These art-science collaborations with scientists included the 2003 Blue Sky Dark Night Geraldton exhibition, followed by the 2009 -2012 Ilgarijiri (Things belonging to the sky) art project international touring exhibition and 2014 – current Shared Sky international touring exhibition in partnership with Bethesda Art Centre (South Africa). The Ilgarijiri project and Shared Sky project included the artists and scientists coming together on Boolardy Station in the Murchison to share, yarn and swap night sky and universe stories. The artists introduced scientists to the “Emu in the Sky” in the Milky Way , and the scientists introduced the Yamaji Art artists to “the Jewellery Box” , “Corvus the crow “ and other constellations. This Exhibition is on display in the Katta Djinoong: First Peoples of Western Australia long term gallery. Yamaji Art Centre
