Wildlife Encounters

Learn all about the different types of spiders and their importance to the urban ecosystem. You will also be invited to share your own personal spider encounters.

The Spider Scoop

Find out more about the spiders living in your own backyard by joining in programmed sessions with Mark Harvey, Senior Curator of Arachnology at the Western Australian Museum. Mark will take you on a unique journey discovering the different features and behaviours of a variety of spiders that could be living right under your nose. Explore and learn more through a range of Western Australian Museum collection items that will be on display.

The Spider Web

After learning about the different types of spiders in Western Australia, get together with a team and make your version of a spider using a range of recyclable materials. Don’t forget to choose features that make the spider unique. After your team has made their spider, it will be photographed and added to the web display inside the Inflatable Museum, and become part of the Museum of Us exhibition. The materials used by your team will be recycled again, ready for the next creation. The team with the best spider will win a prize pack for your school!

Peacock Spider Dance

Mimic the dance moves of the male Peacock Spiders known for their colourful rumps and flashy courtship ‘moves’. A selection of costume pieces will be available for you to wear while participating and a looped projection of the Peacock Spider’s ‘dance moves’ will guide you through the steps.
