Over the school holiday period the Museum of the Great Southern will be open daily from 10am – 4:30pm, except on Wednesdays when it will be open from 12pm – 7pm.

Kai ke ola – Ocean Life

Islands of the South Pacific

Sail into South Pacific island life and the world of Polynesian culture and craft. Discover mysterious Easter Island and the imposing moai statues that solemnly guard the coast, and the dramatic history of mutiny and murder that surrounds Pitcairn Island. Dive into the stunning Pacific Ocean and marvel at its manta rays, sharks, turtles and the deep dark waters of the Tonga Trench.

Cost: Moai sculpture – $3; outrigger canoe – $3; paiia lole-beach bag – $5; lei – $2; stained glass – $3; paint various plasters – free to $5

Enter the world of a South Pacific Islander and spend time in our tiki hut, or admire the amazing crocheted coral reef. Test your bravery by putting your head into the jaws of a shark and marvel at the myriad of sea life in the Pacific Ocean. Build a mini outrigger canoe or sculpt a majestic moai statue. Decorate your own paiia lole (printed fabric) calico beach bag or make yourself a beautiful lei from paper flowers and beads.

Makani leho – Wind shells

Dates: 26 September & 3 October
Times: 10.30am – 11.30am
Cost: $7
Age: 6 – 12
Bookings: Essential (maximum of 12 participants)

Learn how people of the Pacific islands valued shells – not just for their beauty – but they were also used as money and for trade. Create an islander’s wind chime from driftwood, shells and beads, and turn the wind into music.

Pacific Outrigger

Dates: 28 September & 5 October
Times: 10.30am – 11.30am
Cost: $7
Age: 6 – 12
Bookings: Essential (maximum of 12 participants)

Discover how islanders travelled the wide expanse of the Pacific. Use balance and ballast to build a mini outrigger from natural materials that can survive the turbulent seas of your bathtub.
