Adults and children enjoy Play School every day—picking favourite toys and presenters, choosing which window to go through, telling the time on the Play School clock, making craft, listening to stories, dancing, singing along and generally having fun. On 18 July 2016 the much-loved Australian television program Play School turned 50. To celebrate this, National Museum of Australia and ABC developed the exhibition Happy Birthday Play School: Celebrating 50 Years. In this exhibition you will: Learn the history behind Australia’s longest-running children’s television program Meet all your favourite stars—Big Ted, Little Ted, Humpty and Jemima Tell the time on the Rocket or Flower Clock Look through the original Square, Round and Arched Window The Australian version of Play School was adapted from a BBC program of the same name that ceased production in 1988. As Play School celebrates over 50 years on screen it is interesting to consider why it has survived and thrived. How has such a seemingly simple concept continued to capture our imagination? Happy Birthday Play School: Celebrating 50 Years provides a wonderful chance to consider the changing nature and experience of growing up in Australia, while bringing our childhood stories alive. This is a free exhibition suitable for all ages.
