The two gentlemen of Cocos: why 6-inch guns are better than 4-inch guns Fri 13 Mar 2015 6:00pm – 7:00pm WA Maritime Museum Presented by John Dowson, Photographic Historian, Aussiana Books What did the victory of HMAS Sydney against SMS Emden in the 1914 Battle of Cocos mean for Australia? The Last Gentlemen of War exhibition puts balance back into an amazing and important story that is often looked at only from a British or German perspective, by giving an Australian audience an Australian viewpoint. John Dowson is in the process of producing a pictorial history of both ships to complement the exhibition and to be a lasting legacy to the stories involved. His lecture will not only cover the captains and their ships’ meeting at Cocos but the role HMAS Sydney played before and after encountering SMS Emden, and the ‘Boys’ Own’ adventures of the Emden landing party in escaping from Cocos and making their way back to Germany from the middle of the Indian Ocean. Join John for a pictorial focus on this remarkable tale.
