The Minang Mainitch Indigenous Weavers Festival explores how fibres evoke the land and its natural resources, through the eyes of a contemporary world. Join us, share with us, learn with us. Festival program Saturday, 5 March 10.00am Opening ceremony with the Minang Elders and Kinjarling Yallors 10.40am Introduction of weavers and weaving commences. Session focus – function and form 11.30am Weaving continues. Session focus – weaving stories (traditional and contemporary) 12.00 - 1.00pm Weaving mentorship sessions with public questions and practice and the introduction of Uthendo Doll project 2.00pm Weaving continues – Session focus use of traditional materials and adapting materials from your landscape 2.30pm Weaving continues – Session focus weaving stories and myths 3.00pm - 4.30pm Weaving continues – Session focus use of traditional materials and adapting materials from your landscape Sunday 6 March The Sunday schedule will be in the same format as Saturday’s with song sessions in the place of the story sessions. The focus will be on technique and symbol in weaving in indigenous culture. Monday, 7 March 10.00am - 1.00pm Open weaving workshops and final ‘Uthando Dolls’ project work 1.00pm Closing ceremony and dance performance with woven elements that express the weaving of cultures, understanding and the friendships formed over the festival period. ‘Uthando Dolls’ Project Come along and be part of the ‘Uthando Dolls’ project for Africa. Uthando means ‘love’ in the Zulu language. Put your newly learnt weaving skills to use and weave a skirt, wrap or belt for one of these special dolls which will assist HIV AIDS orphans to develop physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially and spiritually.
