GT1389C - Ship's timber

Five adjoining fragments of sacrificial planking; two have knot. Plus 22 fragments that may have joined once but are now disconnected. Poorly preserved. Nail holes from sheathing nails, square in section, closely spaced. Rounded nail head impressions on exterior surface. Three fragments (including the two with knots) have mechanical saw marks on their interior surfaces (near knots). This plank was sawn by a wind-driven sawing mill. The sawmarks are very straight and regular, run perpendicular to the length of the timber.

One treenail preserved, round in section; and two partial treenail holes; one has treenail peg preserved in it on exterior surface of hull planking (whereas treenail itself is missing. Iron nail observed nearby each treenail, square in section. Treenail is pegged with square peg on exterior surface; peg has nail hole from sheathing nail. Exterior surface: sheathing nail holes, square in section, closely spaced in diagonal or alternating pattern. Interior surface; original surface not well preserved.

Fragment of frame or beam, square in section with straight edges between the four faces. Timber has three treenails, 2 treenail holes, and one partial treenail hole. Treenails used to attach frame to hull planking, rounded in section. Two treenails seated very close to one another; one of which is blind treenail that is smaller in diameter, which suggests the ceiling planking was treenailed onto frames. No other fasteners present.
