A small (to 3 cm) yet elongate frog with short legs and a coarse granular skin. Brown or black with bright patches of orange on the snout, behind the eyes, rump and fore/hind limbs. Belly white, usually with irregular black markings.

Breeding Biology

In response to episodic rain events. Known to lay eggs under rocks near streams or waterholes, and also purportedly directly in to the water (unlike all other members of the genus).

Habitat

Only known from permanent water sources in rocky areas.

Etymology

Named for Athol Douglas, an associate of the WA Museum.

General

This rare species has an ancient relictual arid distribution quite separate from other toadlets.

Restricted to the Pilbara region, with isolated populations on the North West Cape and Mt Augustus.
