A round frog.
Has a rough back and a smooth belly.
They have a dark brown back, which may look reddy. They may have grey or yellow marking on their sides.
Males have one or two small black spines on the thumbs which are used when mating.
How big are they?
Adults can be up to 7cm long.
What do they eat?
Adult frogs eat small bugs like insects, spiders and worms. Tadpoles eat rotting plants and algae.
What do they sound like?
Their call is a ‘whoop’ sound repeated once per second.
Where can they be found?
In sandy or clay soil and in forests in the SWAN COASTAL PLAIN, DARLING RANGE and SOUTH-WEST FORESTS areas of the SOUTH-WEST region of Western Australia.
What is a fun fact about this animal?
They have been named after the sound of their call, a ‘whooping’ sound.

Western Spotted Frog

What names do they have?

What do they look like?
A big and powerful frog, with strong legs.
They are chocolate brown and have lots of white to pale yellow spots on their back.
Males have one or two small black spines on the thumbs which are used when mating.
How big are they?
Adults can be up to 10cm long.
What do they eat?
Adult frogs eat small bugs like insects, spiders and worms. Tadpoles eat rotting plants and algae.
What do they sound like?
Their call is a 'coo' sound repeated about once per second.
Where can they be found?
In puddles or marshy areas in the NORTH COAST, WHEATBELT, SWAN COASTAL PLAIN, DARLING RANGE and SOUTH-WEST FORESTS areas of the SOUTH-WEST region of Western Australia.
What is a fun fact about this animal?
Males dig a burrow, and call from within it to attract a female. The female will deposit her eggs here. The burrow can be up to one metre long!

Quacking Froglet

What kind of animal are they?

What do they look like?
They are small and stay close to the ground.
They can look very different to each other. They have smooth or bumpy areas of dark brown, light tan and grey.
They have a red patch in the groin.
They have golden eyelids.
Males have much thicker arms than females.
How big are they?
Adults can be up to 4cm long.
What do they eat?
Adult frogs eat small bugs like insects, spiders and worms. Tadpoles eat rotting plants and algae.
What do they sound like?
They sound like a duck quacking.
Where can they be found?
In forests of the WHEATBELT, SWAN COASTAL PLAIN, DARLING RANGE and SOUTH-WEST FORESTS areas of the SOUTH-WEST region of Western Australia.
What is a fun fact about this animal?
If you make a quacking sound, the males will respond by quacking back!

Humming Frog

The frog that has a red stripe down its back...

What names do they have?

What do they look like?
They have a flat broad head.
They have cat-like eyes.
The colours on their back can be pale green or grey with darker green or brown patches.
They usually have a red stripe down their back.
The skin on their back is always rough.
How big are they?
Adults can be up to 4.5cm long.

Moaning Frog

What do they look like?
A round frog with big eyes.
They have short arms and legs.
The colours on their back can be dark brown or grey, mottled in dirty white or light grey.
Their sides are often a yellow colour.
The males have larger arms.
How big are they?
Adults can be up to 6.5cm long.
What do they eat?
Adult frogs eat small bugs like insects, spiders and worms. Tadpoles eat rotting plants and algae.
What do they sound like?
Their call is a sad, long, drawn out moan.
Where can they be found?
In the NORTH COAST, WHEATBELT, SWAN COASTAL PLAIN, DARLING RANGE and SOUTH-WEST FORESTS areas of the SOUTH-WEST region of Western Australia.
During breeding season, in early autumn, they are found in swampy areas, along flowing water sources and wetlands where the soil is sandy. At other times of the year, they move away to live in surrounding bushlands.

They are found in people’s gardens who live close to the wetlands. They make a moaning call which can keep people awake at night!

Turtle Frog

The frog that looks like a turtle without its shell...

What names do they have?

What kind of animal are they?
Amphibian

Thriving
What do they look like?
A very strange looking frog.
They have a body shape like a turtle with the shell removed.
They have a very small head, with tiny eyes that stick out a long way from the body.
They have short muscly arms and legs.
The colours on their back can range from a pink colour to medium to light brown.
How big are they?
Adults can be up to 5.1cm long.
What do they eat?
Only termites.
What do they sound like?
They have a deep croaking call.
Where can they be found?
In sandy soils and in places where there is not a lot of water in the NORTH COAST, WHEATBELT, SWAN COASTAL PLAIN, DARLING RANGE and SOUTH-WEST FORESTS areas of the SOUTH-WEST region of Western Australia.
What is a fun fact about this animal?
They skip the tadpole stage - miniature versions of the adults come out of the eggs!

Western Banjo Frog

What do they look like?
They have a grey or dark green back with lots of dark brown blotches.
They have a pale stripe down their back.
They have bright orange markings on the thighs.
They have a gland at the corner of their mouth.
They have poisonous glands on their calves.
How big are they?
Adults can be up to 7.5cm long.
What do they eat?
Adult frogs eat small bugs like insects, spiders and worms. Tadpoles eat rotting plants and algae.
What do they sound like?
Their call is a single loud ‘bonk’ like a banjo repeated at different times and answered by other male Banjo frogs.
Where can they be found?
In farm dams, swamps, wetlands and streams of the NORTH COAST, WHEATBELT, SWAN COASTAL PLAIN, DARLING RANGE and SOUTH-WEST FORESTS areas of the SOUTH-WEST region of Western Australia.

Slender Tree Frog

What kind of animal are they?

What do they look like?
Their backs are all the same colour, ranging from pale brown to bright green.
They have a dark stripe along both sides of their head and body.
The back of their thigh is black with bright yellow or red spots.
Their toes are webbed and their fingers have sticky pads on them to grip onto things.
Males have one or two small black spines on the thumbs which are used when mating.
How big are they?
Adults can be up to 4.5cm long.

What do they sound like?
A loud single grating ‘grrrk.’ Their choruses can be very loud when all of the males call together.

Their backs are dark purple-black.
