mus-ed: education at the WA Museum

Welcome to mus-ed, the official education blog of the Western Australian Museum.

Many teachers are surprised when they find out that the Museum offers excursion opportunities across our six sites located in Perth, Fremantle, Albany, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Our engaging and interactive programs provide links between the Museum’s collections, your classroom program and the curriculum. We have a range of facilitated programs for all developmental levels, led by our dedicated team of Education Officers, as well as a range of self-guided experiences for those classes that wish to explore the Museums on their own.

Following is a snapshot of the experiences that are on offer for schools at each of our six sites:

  • Perth
Unearth a buried T-Rex fossil; wrap an Egyptian mummy; share stories from local Indigenous cultures; examine amazing animal species; and travel back in time to explore early European settlement.
  • Maritime (Fremantle)
Learn how boats float; imagine sailing around the world alone; marvel at the winged keel of Australia II; learn about global warming and sustainable fishing techniques; and see the awesome Submarine HMAS Ovens.
  • Shipwrecks (Fremantle)
Uncover tales of exploration, disaster, mutiny and survival; learn how to load and fire replica cannons; imagine life aboard a 17th century sailing ship; and identify a mystery shipwreck.
  • Geraldton
Discover fascinating stories of shipwrecks, mutineers, cameleers and stockmen, miners and the Indigenous people of the region; write with pen and ink; search for gold; and send Morse Code signals.
  • Albany
Explore Albany’s rich maritime history; learn about the amazing marine habitats of the southern seas; find out about local species and why some are under threat; discover traditional Minang life; and experience the reality of life in days past.
  • Kalgoorlie-Boulder
Explore the living conditions, cultures and social lives of the people living on the goldfields; join in with old-fashioned games; and explore the discovery and recovery of extinct creatures big and small.
