Frog and Brolga interactive experience

A Gija creation story

This online interactive experience of the Gija Creation story ‘Jirraginy joo Goorrarndal: Frog and Brolga’ is an adaptation of the Gija permanent interactive display panel situated in The WA Museum’s Boola Bardip Origins Gallery.

In 2009, SharingStories Founder Liz Thompson began working with the Gija Community, and Senior Gija Custodian Shirley Drill to record and document 'Jirraginy joo Goorrarndal: Frog and Brolga'. In 2017, SharingStories returned to collaborate with the Gija community on the creation of a rich bilingual animated version of the story. The resulting content, created by students at Purnululu Aboriginal Independent Community School in Frog Hollow and Cultural Custodians from the Warmun Art Centre in the East Kimberley of Western Australia, includes original artwork, animations, photographs, and videos from Gija Country. Media was curated into both an innovative bilingual multi-touch book and a permanent interactive display panel housed at Boola Bardip Origins Gallery.

This online adaptation, developed at the request of Gija Custodians, now enables the community to both celebrate and access their work on Country as well as share important cultural knowledge with online audiences.

The Origins Gallery showcases some of Western Australia’s unique and iconic landscapes through Aboriginal peoples’ ancient and enduring connection to Country. The gallery features four major displays and eight smaller displays from 12 language groups in Western Australia. The interactive display panel is located in the centre of the gallery with a sculptural impression of Gawarre (the Bungle Bungle Ranges) and an artwork by Senior Gija Custodian, Phyllis Thomas.
