SMOCK

H1986.343

Coat-type smock of heavy white cotton twill; front opening with 9 large flat mother of pearl buttons, one missing; (probably not original); inset pocket each side with flap outlined in machine stitching; elaborate panels of smocking and embroidery; yoke embroidered front & back; small foldover collar embroidered around edge; longe sleeve with square underarm gusset, small panels of smocking at shoulder and cuff; attached cuff with band of embroidery with single mother of pearl button. Handsewn throughout except pocket detail.

Addition 19.1.90:
The embroidery appears to be fairly coarse work, to be done quickly. The side seams are not run and fell seams as is usual althought the seams in the arms are. Information from Margaret Herzfeld, smocker.
