DRESS, Mid-Late 19th Century

Dress of khaki brown cotton sprigged with tiny blue and white flowers; 1850s style cut: roundnecked bodice, front-opening with 5 ornamented dark blue wooden buttons; lined with stout white calico; inset waistband with 2 hooks and eyes; skirt gauged at front, pleated around waistband; 3 tucks above hem, one taken out to lengthen skirt; pocket inset on left side; long sleeves, lined with calico; gathered, pseudo-puff at shoulders; hand and machine-sewn. Size would fit child of 5-7 years. Christies Catalogue dates dress to c. 1870; cf puffs at shoulder in pic 154 in Ginsburg; archaic style could persist, cf Cunnington & Buck, p. 205.
