WATER CLOSET, Half Model (Toilet Bowl)

H1991.97

"THE / SANITAS / wash / down / closet" in a decorated shield shaped scroll, "water area 25 sq. in". Pedestal base has embossed foliate pattern at top of front, all white. "S" bend with inspection hole. The style appears similar to 1890s bowls, though H91.97 - 99 seem more recent than H91.95 and 96, but this one .97 has an inspection opening, unlike any of the others. The washout closet was produced from 1870, it had a bowl with some water retained, and an S - bend trap. An improved " Unitas " model was introduced in 1885, and was the first free standing pedestal water closet. This is one of 5 sectioned models, most of which are washdown closets, an improvement on the " Unitas " washout closet and produced about the same time as the Unitas, and with names similar to the Unitas.
