WASHING MACHINE, Wringer model, 'Simpson'

T1978.92

`MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY \ A. SIMPSON & SON LTD \ ADELAIDE \ UNDER LICEN FROM \ MAXWELL LTD \ ONTARIO CANADA \ SERIAL NO. B1103 VOLTAGE 220-250 \ AMP 32-35 \ QUARTER (written as 1 over 4) H.P. ELECTRIC MOTOR'. Wringer model. Cream and white enamel. Letter from A.M. Simpson, 24-1-78 (file 171.71): This machine second style produced with `deep skirt', c 23 cm deep. First model had skirt 11.5 cm deep. First series had bolted on legs. This model "has a more elegantly styled leg attached to the skirt by tongues pushed through slots in the skirt and turned over". Appears to be of third type used. First was imported from Maxwell's an "only 40 were produced for us by a melbourne company called Wringers Pty Ltd w went into liquidation shortly after starting deliver". May not have delivered any at all. "They had a cross bar type of release which was simple and positi and continued in use (I think) until about 1952, when we started making the Lovell model 52, with parallel push-bar release". Cannot date more accurately then between (1946-52 but, from low serial No. at early end... we made several hundred thousand.
