Dispenser's label "For Filling Stock MANOMETERS / SELBYS H.B. SELBY & CO PTY LTD / 43 KING STREET, PERTH / SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS, LABORATORY . EQUIPMENT & CHEMICALS / MELBOURNE . SYDNEY . BRISBANE . HOBART . ADELAIDE" Dictionary of British Scientific Instruments has this definition of a manometer; "An instrument for measuring the tension or elastic force of gases, steam, etc,; constructed usually on the principle of allowing the gas to exert its elastic force in raising a column of mercury in an open tube, or in compressing a portion of air or other gas in a closed tube with mercury or other liquid intervening, or in bending a metallic tube or spring so as to set in motion an index. A pressure gauge." It lists four types of manometers; air [for measuring the pressure of gas in the balloon of an airship], coal dust [to record pressure developed during an explosion of coal gas], differential [to indicate difference of gaseous pressure, used for furnace gas etc] and flame [obtains graphic representation of the sounds of the human voice].
