PYROMETER, Indicating and Recording

H1989.786

Former Kalgoorlie Mining Associates property. Rough wooden box encases instrument which has maker's plaque applied to the front: "INDICATING & RECORDING / PYROMETER / TYPE C.R. 250 VOLTS 30 [?] ETHER LTD. BIRMINGHAM. ENG." The pyrometer's graph paper is calibrated in hours vertically, on the left hand column of the paper, and in lots of 200 degrees centigrade horizontally. There is a gauge above the graph paper which is also calibrated in degrees. There is a mechanism to adjust or zero gauge. Otherwise instrument cannot be altered as box does not allow this. Thus all that its visible is the frame of the machine and the graph paper which is fed through it to obtain its reading. Dictionary of British Scientific Instruments: "Pyrometer- Instrument used for the measurement of temperatures higher than those for which a glass thermometer is suitable. In its simplest form it depends on the expansion of a solid metal rod or of a gas, but more commonly it consists of an electrical device. The pyrometer in most common use depends on the electrical current generated by a junction of two different metals or alloys when it is heated. This will indicate temperatures up to about 1,350 or 1400 degrees."
