MEDAL, South African Campaign

On obverse at centre, crowned head of Edward VII facing left (coinage is reversed), and inside the laurel wreath border, EDWARD. VII. DG / REX. ET. I". In the wide border around this are the figures of Justice (blindfolded with sword and balance scales), Peace (with dove and olive branch), and Industry. A village scene, churches and the houses of parliament are also presented. Around the rim at the top, "OPPRESSORUM / CONSERVATOR", and on banners over a British shield at the base, "TRANSVAAL / ORANGE RIVER COLONIES". Lord Roberts in full military uniform is depicted on horseback on the reverse with ranks of marching soldiers and a cannon in the background. Lettered beneath, "PAX QUAERITUR BELLO / 1901" (Peace is sought by war). Above Roberts are two angels, one with trump and the other about to place a laurel wreath on the soldier's head. At the rim - "SOUTH AFRICA", and beneath the angels - "VIRTUTE / ET DUCTU" is printed. The edge is marked with a registration number, "K87", and "BRONZE NO 33". Faintly, adjacent to the horse's head, "F. BOWCHER INVS / SPINK FECIT" can be discerned. Medal was made by F. Bowcher for Spink & Son.
