MEDAL, INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION AWARD, IN CASE, GOLD

H1990.305.a-b

a. Gold medal; on obverse, head of a young woman, a branch of the tree beside her forming a coronet. Around the edge, "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE". A bridge and a backdrop of a city can be seen to the right of the woman's head. On the reverse a winged person, holding a wreath and supporting a seated male figure, flies over what appears to be an Exhibition building. Beneath this, lettered in a frame, "EXPOSITION COLLECTIVE / DE LA WESTERN / AUSTRALIAN COMMISSION" and around the edge, "EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE INTERNATIONALE." Near one wing, "1900". "BRONZE" is marked on the rim. Beneath the foot of the flying figure, "J. G. CHAPLAIN" can be discerned. On reverse, old Art Gallery number, "K78". b. Red leather or leatherette flat box, decorated with a pattern in gold around the edge and with gold lettering "EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE / 1900". The base inside is lined with red velvet and there is a depression to secure the medal. The top is lined in cream- coloured silk.
