On obverse, within wreath with cushion supporting crossed sceptres and a crown at the top, the heads of Victoria and Albert and the wording "QUEEN VICTORIA & / PR: ALBERT". The reverse depicts a magnificent building (the Crystal Palace) with colonnades three stories high and trees and people in the foreground. Around the rim at the top, "THE INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION / LONDON, 1851" and on the lower third, "PROPOSED BY H.R.H PRINCE ALBERT, / DESIGNED BY JOSEPH PAXTON ESQ F.L.S / ERECTED BY FOX, HENDERSON AND CO. / LENGTH 1848 FEET, WIDTH 456 FEET, / HEIGHT OF PRINCIPAL ROOF 66 FEET, / HEIGHT OF TRANSEPT 108 FEET. / GLAZED SURFACE 900,000 SUP FEET. / OCCUPIES 18 ACRES / OF GROUND / ESTIMATED VALUE (pound symbol) 150,000."; number "D10 / 1946" has been inked on reverse. The Crystal Palace had 293,655 panes of glass, 30 standardized iron columns and 24 miles of guttering - see bibliography.
