LEVELLING STAFF

Former Kalgoorlie Mining Associates property. Rectangular: 3 sides wooden, face has metal rule calibrated in imperial measure. There are 3 rules of graduating sizes from the large outer rule to the smallest inner rule. They fold like a telescope in order to be carried around. When extended together reach 16 feet. Has red 9 or 6 painted on back of instrument. 16 foot capacity indicates it is a terrestrial rather than underground instrument. Levelling staffs are used by surveyors to guide their sight level as surveying instruments sight on level line. Dictionary of British Scientific Instruments; "A staff, generally of telescopic construction, marked with divisions representing vertical heights used for surveying purposes."
