PANTAGRAPHS -2- in Wooden Boxes

H1989.753

Former Kalgoorlie Mining Associates property. "An instrument used in copying plans, maps, and other drawings on the same or on a reduced or enlarged scale. It consists of a series of levers pivoted together having a tracing point and a pencil fixed to suitable points on the levers." [Taken from Dictionary of Scientific Instruments]. Pantograph is obviously different spelling for same instrument; these pantagraphs appear to be for reducing plans only, not for enlarging plans as Dictionary outlines. a. Does not appear to have any maker's marks. In coffin shaped box. b. Has maker's instructions and specifications pinned to lid: "THE PANTAGRAPH / IS AN INSTRUMENT DESIGNED FOR COPYING PLANS, ETC / TO A REDUCED SCALE / Two of the arms, B & C, are divided, and figured to the Proportional / Scales as shown on the next page, the index line on the Sliding Socket Piece is clamped against the scale required. / THERE ARE TWO METHODS OF USING THE INSTRUMENT:- / 1. The ERECT METHOD, by which the copy is produced the same way up as the original. / 2. THE REVERSE method, by which the copy is produced inverted. / When using the ERECT method, the fulcrum is on the outside arm B, the pencil point on arm C, the point is always used on arm B (illustration above shows instrument set for Erect Method). / When using the REVERSE Method, the fulcrum is placed on socket on arm C and the pencil in arm B. The ratios marked on arms B and C apply some to the Erect and others / to the Reverse methods, and the following table will show clearly how to set the instrument. / ... W.H. Harling, Mathematical Drawing & Surveying Instrument Manufacturer, 117 MOORGATE, LONDON, E.C."
