DRESS, black silk

DRESS. [.1] Black, sleeveless silk petticoat. Bodice front in three panels, back one piece. Scoop neck. A yellow, red and brown butterfly is embroidered on each shoulder. Slightly gathered skirt with scalloped hem. Twelve butterflies are embroidered on the twelve scallops.
[.2] Sheer, black, net overdress with wide collar edged with a frill and decorated with embroidered butterflies as before. Skirt has five gathered tiers sewn onto a net underskirt. The lowered waist has a black velvet ribbon encircling it with a generous bow tie on the left hand hip. The butterflies were probably machine made but appliqued onto the dress by hand.
