`PURETHA' GAS MASK KIT

Former Kalgoorlie Mining Associates property. Kit contains; a. hand made box b. one canister with canvas strapping c. one gas mask d. tin of anti dimming substance e,f 2 gauges g. packet of burn dressing h. pair of plastic eyeshields a. Box has no marks and appears to be hand made. Has dymo label "PURETHA MASK" and has `Puretha Mask handwritten in chalk. The burn dressing and eyeshields do not appear to have connection with the kit- this and the makeshift box indicate that the kit has been assembled by staff. b. Canister has "03 1770" stamped on it and instruction sheet strapped to it by the canvas strapping which secures canister to body. Has sign which was once stuck to it by sticky tape; the tape has perished and the typewritten sign is loose: "THE BLUE GRANULES VISIBLE THROUGH / THE WINDOW WILL CHANGE TO PINK WHEN CANISTER IS APPROACHING EXHAUSTION" Instructions read: "`Puretha` Respirator All Service Type REMOVE BOTTOM SEAL BEFORE USING Suitable for use in Carbon Monoxide and other gases for a total period of two hours. A careful check of time should be kept and the canister replaced with a new one after two hours use. WARNINGS: Replace cap and seal after use. This apparatus is NOT TO BE USED IN STILL, TANKS, ENCLOSED PLACES or many circumstances where a concentration of gas is likely to be present. this respirator MUST NEVER BE USED IN AN ATMOSPHERE DEFICIENT IN OXYGEN. Special apparatus can be supplied for such conditions. Date filled - 8 Mar 1962 No. 031770 Patentees and Sole Manufacturers:SIEBE GORMAN & CO LTD" c. Gas mask identical to masks in H89.759 (photocopy of illustration attached). Has sticker on front; "G & CO LTD / OCT 1950". d. Tin of Anti-dimming substance. Cylinder with screw on lid at both ends. One end unscrews and reveals anti-dimming substance, other end has cloth. Cloth occupies largest proportion of cylinder. Cylinder reads: "OUTFIT ANTI- / DIMMING MKV. / INSTRUCTIONS FOR / USE / CLEAN EYEPIECE WITH / CLOTH PROVIDED. / APPLY A LITTLE OF THE / COMPOUND EVENLY / WITH THE FINGER. / IF IT IS TOO STIFF / TO SPREAD EASILY, / BREATHE ON THE EYE PIECE TO MOISTEN / IT. SPREAD LIGHTLY / OVER THE EYEPIECE / WITH THE CLOTH. / DO NOT POLISH. / BREATHE ON THE / EYEPIECE UNTIL IT / BECOMES CLEAR". Both lids have "No 248III / 8W & M LTD / Y1 / 40" impressed on them. e. gauge: rubber backed, with brass front and glass dial. Has screw attachment for attaching it to (perhaps) gas bottle bottle to show the pressure of the gas in the cylinder. To the other side of the manifold is connected a Dial reads; "ATMOSPHERES / OXYGEN / USE NO OIL / No C1 28390 / SIEBE, GORMAN & CO LTD LONDON." From 1 to 150 minutes, with red mark at 120 minutes. f. gauge: brass and glass. Dial reads; "OXYGEN / USE NO OIL / ATMOSPHERES / SIEBE, GORMAN & CO LTD LONDON." From 1 to 150 minutes, with red mark at 120 minutes. g. Opened but unused packet of burn dressing, reads; "Johnsons / LARGE BURN DRESSING . STERILISED . BPC STANDARD DRESSING No 12" on front. "B.P.C. STANDARD DRESSING No 12 / Do not prick blisters or apply iodine solution. Avoid touching wound, when opening dressing avoid fingering antispetic pad. Place pad over / wound retain hold of short end of Bandage. Wind remainder firmly / and tie. Johnson & Johnson" on back. h. Plastic eyepiece; eyepieces joined at bridge, i.e. plastic glasses all one piece; hinged metal piece clips on & off, with holes to perhaps attach eyepiece to another surface.
