ROAD SET

Large set of roads and traffic signals for small toy cars. Similar to racing car set. When set up it covers about 3 metres by 2.5 metres. Each piece only accepts cars travelling in one direction so there are two parallel lanes for each road. Traffic signals direct cars around the tracks. a. The roads start from a roundabout called 'CIRCUS'. It has been designed to be an intersection of four roads but only two adjoining roads appear to have been made. It has a grassed section (painted) in the middle and 'KEEP LEFT' signs between each road entrance. Painted grey. Numbered '0' '6' '22' '23'. An almost circular piece has been cut out at each number for the road end to slot into. b. Four way intersection with roads leading off in three directions. Cross-walks painted across each road (all around the edge of the piece). White painted circle in centre with hole for sign. Not clear which sign this should be. Numbered '2','3','8','9','17','18'. Painted black. Holes for roads as in a. A small hole has been cut in each corner to accept a pole with a traffic light. (H89.312jj,kk,ll,mm.) c. Labelled 'Semi-Circus' and numbered '5' '11' '12'. U bend with garden in the centre. Has one road coming in and two going out. Painted grey. Holes for fitting as in a. d. Labelled 'TERMINUS' U bend with one road going in and one out. Garden in centre. 'KEEP LEFT' and 'NO ENTRY' painted on it. Painted grey. Holes for fitting as in a. e. Road piece with high edging. Road painted grey, edging white. Hole cut out of one end and almost round protusion at the other to enable the piece to fit with others. Numbered '26' '30'. 'Road Sec' written on the back in pencil. f. As for e. Numbered '29' '31' and has 'Right Road Sec' written on base. g. As for e. but has '25' '23' written on it. h. As for e. but has '22' '24' written on it. i. As for e. but has '7' '8' written on it. j. As for e. but has '1' '2' written on it. k. As for e. but has '28' '21' and 'Matches other / single piece lane / 27 1/2 " ' and 'a' written on it. l. As for e. but has '18' '19' written on it. m. As for e. but has '16' '17' written on it. n. As for e. but curved and has '14' '15' '20' '21' written on it. It is curved instead of straight and has two roads going off from one side as well as one at each end. o. As for e. but has '13' '14' and 'Matches B track ?' written on it. p. As for e. but has '9' '10' and instead of 'Road Sec' 'Right track from Semi Circus' written on it. q. As for e. but has '12' '13' and 'matches left U?' written on it. r. Short piece of road labelled 'Road Connection' '10' '11' and with 'Semi Circus' and 'B' written in pencil on the back. Has an almost round protuding connector on each end. Painted grey with white edging. s. As for but painted black with white edging and the only writing is '28' in small black letters on one edge. t. Curved short piece of road, painted grey with white edging Has almost round holes at each end for connecting with other pieces. Has '19' and '20' painted on it. u. As for t. but with '15' '16' on it. v. As for r. but with '4' and '5' and 'A' on it. w. Short piece of road labelled 'Road / Coupling', painted black with white edges and with protuding connectors at each end. It has th number '27' painted in small letters in black on one side of the edging. On the base it has 'Intersection' written in pencil. x. Same shape as w. painted grey with white edges, labelled 'Road Connection' and '6' '7'. y. Same as x. but with numbers '0' and '1'. The letter 'B' is written in pencil next to the 0. z,aa-ff,ii,rr. Small double almost round pieces labelled 'Coupling' All painted grey and numbered '20' '31' '25' '24' '19' '16' '15' and '30' respectively. gg,hh Rectangular pieces labelled 'Road Intersection'. Each has an almost round hole in each side and road edging in each corner. The edging is painted white, the remainder black. gg. is numbered '26' '27' '24' and hh. is numbered '25' '29'. jj,kk,ll,mm Traffic lights to sit in b. Each has a pole made from dowelling painted in yellow and black stripes and a yellow box on top. Drawing pins have been stuck in on three sides and painted red, orange and green to simulate the lights. nn Level crossing boom gate. Base is painted orange, upright post blue and boom yellow and black stripes. The boom swivels up and down on a nail. oo-qq Stop sign. Yellow pole and sign with either black or white writing. ss Spare length of road, painted grey with white edging. tt Pedestrian crossing sign. Black base, yellow pole and sign with 'CROSSING' and a pair of legs in black on the sign. The toys were used by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to Teacher's College in 1930 and joined the Education Department of W.A. in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classes for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She also made and purchased a large collection of puppets which were used as teaching aids. These are accessioned under numbers H88/613 to H89/307 (not inclusive).
