Marionette, male possibly from the Regency period. Head - Moulded material, possibly plaster? Has number '2' impressed on back of neck. Has moulded features, painted blue eyes, red lips, and purple eyebrows. Long grey hair tied at the back with a bow. Face is heavily coloured pink with traces of red on cheeks. Body - 15 pieces. Jointed dowel legs and arms, composition hands, wooden feet painted black. Clothes - Green cloth jacket, open at front, wide sleeves with wide cuffs. Embroidered in green and white in `Chinese' style. Yellow shirt with lace at collar. Bottom edge is higher at centre front than on each side where it comes down in a point in the style of a waistcoat. Trousers come as far as the knee and are apricot coloured. The lower legs have been painted white. The sticks have been stamped 'PELHAM PUPPET MADE IN ENGLAND'. The entire collection of marionettes and puppets, which includes 31 marionettes, 26 hand puppets (glove and rod), 20 puppet heads, 9 hand sticks, 3 stick dolls and a travelling stage, were used, and many were made, by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to teacher's college in 1930 and joined the Education Department of WA in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classed for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She used the puppets as teaching aids for the disabled children.
