Marionette, Scotsman with bottle. Head - wooden sphere with spherical wooden nose and hinged jaw. Face painted pink with blue eyes. White sheep's wool hair. Body - 16 pieces. Legs and arms dowel, hands composition. Feet wooden, painted black. Clothes - white shirt with high neck and lace at front of collar. Black velvet looking jacket with white cuff. Red black and white tartan kilt. Socks are painted onto lower legs in red, grey and yellow. A red strip of plastic around the top of the sock holds a felt ribbon in place. Green felt beret with white wool pom pom on top. The stick is stamped 'PELHAM PUPPET MADE IN ENGLAND'. A green wooden bottle is attached to his right hand with a pin. The entire collection of marionettes and puppets, which includes 31 marionettes, 26 hand puppets (glove and rod), 20 puppet heads, 9 hand sticks, 3 stick dolls and a travelling stage, were used, and many were made, by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to teacher's college in 1930 and joined the Education Department of W.A.in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967 she taught at various country schools, took special classes for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She used the puppets as teaching aids for the disabled children.
