MARIONETTE, "Jock The Scottish Boxer"

H1988.784

Male puppet, "Jock The Scottish Boxer". Body - Head and body are made from blocks of deal, centre body made from stuffed cloth. Consists of 11 pieces, head, shoulders, 2 upper arms, 2 fore arms, hips, 2 thighs, 2 lower legs, 2 shoes. Head is a rectangular block with wooden nose and ears, and felt eyes and mouth nailed onto it. White fur hair has fallen off leaving strips of leather nailed to head. Head is held up by 2 strings. Upper arms are attached with metal rings and can move in any direction, fore arms are hinged and can only move up and down, and are encased in leatherette bags stuffed with material for boxing gloves. Legs are attached to wooden hip bar, hinged at knee, painted black shoes which are fixed and do not move. Strings attached to arms and legs are fixed to a separate bar so that they can be moved independently of main puppet. Clothes - Pale green cotton shirt with "Jock" embroidered across it in black thread. Knee-length tartan trousers. The entire collection of marionettes and puppets, which includes 31 marionettes, 26 hand puppets (glove and rod), 20 puppet heads, 9 hand sticks, 3 stick dolls and a travelling stage, were used, and many were made, by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to teacher's college in 1930 and joined the Education Department of WA in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classes for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She used the puppets as teaching aids for the disabled children.
