MARIONETTE, Male

Man in black suit and white shirt. Head - Made from papier mache, with moulded and attached features. Lips, eyebrows, ears and outline of eyes are pieces of papier mache added on to basic face. There is blue eye set in the right eye socket. The upper row of teeth are visible. Lips are painted red, teeth white, eyes and eyebrows black, and hair black. Hair is short and curly. Face is painted brown/pink. Body - 13 pieces. Wooden upper and lower body, dowel lower arms and jointed dowel legs. Wooden feet, painted black. Hands composition? Upper arms wire. Clothes - Black jacket and trousers may be linen. White synthetic fibre (nylon?) shirt with red stitching at front of neck. 'F Rogers' is written on stick. Probably made by Miss Rogers. 'Number 7' is written in pencil on base of left shoe. The entire collection of marionettes and puppets, which includes 31 marionettes, 26 hand puppets (glove and rod), 20 puppet heads, 9 hand sticks, 3 stick dolls and a travelling stage, were used, and many were made, by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to teacher's college in 1930 and joined the Education Department of WA in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classed for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She used the puppets as teaching aids for the disabled children.
