HAND AND ROD PUPPET, Male, Head Only

Puppet, hand and rod, head only. Clothes may be accessioned separately. Made by Miss Rogers Would wear an armless and legless robe. Head - Papier mache, moulded to form features. Prominent chin, cheeks and nose. Mouth is not accentuated and is painted the same pink as the rest of the face. The eyes are felt, with black pupils, and pink upper eyelid. The eyes are looking down and the addition of an upper lid gives a hooded effect. The head is bald, the hair area is painted white as is a band around the bottom of the head- piece at the neck. The face is smiling but featureless and the overall effect is strange. Body - none. This would be provided by clothes. Rod - Wooden with adhesive tape wrapped around the top and also around the bottom of the head where they join. The entire collection of marionettes and puppets, which includes 31 marionettes, 26 hand puppets (glove and rod), 20 puppet heads, 9 hand sticks, 3 stick dolls and a travelling stage, were used, and many were made, by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to teacher's college in 1930 and joined the Education Department of WA in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classed for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She used the puppets as teaching aids for the disabled children.
