Cover - splotchy pattern, brown and maroon, black and gold in colour.
Spine - faded to brown.
Inscription on inside of front cover reads 'CHARLOTTE EMERY/ WESTERN AUSTRALIA/ HAY STREET WEST/ PERTH/ JUNE 1ST 1903'. Pieces of paper folded and placed inside cover. Papers include -
- Recipe for Boston Tea Cake and on reverse one for Green Tomato Pickles.
- Letter to Victoria Hobbs signed 'AUNT RACHEL', sends commiserations on the death of Victoria Hobbs' mother (?).
- Recipe for ointment dated 1897.
- Thankyou card from Family of James Alexander Ryan, died '25th February, 1962'.
- 'WHAT SHALL I COOK' 18 page book with recipes. Is an advertisement for the virtues of 'Dr. Morse's INDIAN ROOT PILLS', also articles about worms, constipation, bilucs, indigestions, rheumatism, lumbago and sciatica and other health complaints. Last page is calendar for 1939 and 1940.
- Brown envelope contains newspaper clippings; dated 1900 and receipt dated 21.7.36. Has a penny Western Australian stamp stuck on it. The rest of free pages are various recipes.
Cook book - handwritten contains mostly recipes but in 2nd half also 'WORDS OF WISDOM' and pressed flowers and many blank pages. The recipes are mostly for cakes and puddings, pickles and sauces and a couple of recipes for ointment are included.
