The introduction (p. 5) gives the objectives of the book for students; for girls who left school, simplicity and for rural people.
The book is 281 pages long plus several pages at the end for notes. It contains recipes of all kinds plus instructions on basic cooking techniques and various advertisements for food stuffs (including one for Coca-Cola on p. 45) and for other domestic and culinary goods; also food value/ nutrition. It includes diagrams, reproduced photographs as well as drawings.
Stuck in the pages are:
- Envelope addressed to 'SISTER V. HOBBES/ 13 GARDNEER STREET/ COMO/ WESTERN AUSTRALIA (pg.156). Has a 7¢ stamp with a picture of the Queen on it and is stamped 'CARLTON STH/ NOON/ 27 JAN/ 1972'.
- Book of postage stamps with advertisements for the Commonwealth Bank, Creative Media Design. SA, The Linguaphone Institute Pty Ltd, Melbourne, Olympic Tyres. Front cover reads 'TWELVE 5 POSTAGE STAMPS 5/-'(pg.183).
- Recipe for Sultana Cake (p.232).
- Recipe written on an envelope (pg.262).
