COOKERY BOOK, "Miss Drake's"
H1990.145
Born in 1888, Mr Stephens moved to Kalgoorlie with his family in 1902. He later began working in a barber's shop (with living quarters) at 13 Hannan Street. He eventually bought the shop, where he lived and continued to practise his trade. He never married, nor did he ever go prospecting. In 1987 the premises were demolished to make way for the new Museum of the Goldfields; Mr Stephens had moved to the Kalgoorlie Nursing Home by this time. Most personal effects from his house were accessioned into the collection at this time. Cookery book: "The Original and only Miss Drake's Home Cookery" first published 1915, this 3rd issue of the 11th edition was published in Nov, 1943. Basic recipe book, with advertisements running through it for services, also has many war notices eg. "REMEMBER - Spreading Rumours is an Offence", "A CARELESS WORD MAY LAY A MINEFIELD". Has many advertisements for solicitors, and many references to the importance of making a will.
