Born in 1888, Mr Stephens moved to Kalgoorlie with his family in 1902. He later began working in a barber's shop (with living quarters) at 13 Hannan Street. He eventually bought the shop, where he lived and continued to practise his trade. He never married, nor did he ever go prospecting. In 1987 the premises were demolished to make way for the new Museum of the Goldfields; Mr Stephens had moved to the Kalgoorlie Nursing Home by this time. Most personal effects from his house were accessioned into the collection at this time. a. Has 3 panels sewed together - appears to be either mended, or hand made from 3 pieces of fabric. 2 outer panels are bordered with identical purple, green and mustard floral pattern. Centre panel is the largest and has this same pattern at edges. Single sheet, has been machine stitched. b. As a. but without side panels attached. As it is less worn, its small size may indicate is was not used as a sheet as it is so narrow.
