OIL PAINTING, 'Sultan', c1894-1904 *TRANSFERRED TO MARITIME HISTORY COLLECTION*

Inscriptions: Not signed or dated. "Sultan" appears on hull of ship. Subject Matter: Single-funnel, two-masted steamer. Flying red ensign and blue flag with Alfred Holt's insignia "AH", China blue funnel with black top. Starboard side showing, probably intended as a pair with T70.470 which shows port side. Biography: Signed painting SH84.1027 enabled identification of artist. Other: Dates estimated by period when both ships were at Fremantle. Steel, single-screw. Build in 1894 by Workman Clark & Co., Belfast. Owners: Ocean Steamship Co. Ltd. Registered Liverpool; July 1895 OSS Co. Ltd. and Western Australian Steamship Navigation Company Ltd. reg. Fremantle; June 1898 Ocean Steamship Co; 1909 sold to Japan and renamed "Kayo Maru". Is famous as the first vessel to officially use Fremantle Harbour at its formal opening 4 May 1897 under Captain Frank Pitts with Lady Forrest at the wheel. 1895 joint ownership to cope with increasing trade - calling at Geraldton, Shark Bay, Carnarvon Roads, Ashburton Roads, Roebuck Bay Roads ..... Derby to Singapore. On alternate three week periods, the "Sultan" and the WASN's "Australind" made the trip to Singapore.
