Inscriptions: Signed and dated: "T.G. Purvis / Greenwich, London" lower left corner - scratched to expose under- paint. In same manner: "Arrino, Capt J.W.W. Yates, 1907" lower centre. Also "Arrino" appears on bow of ship. Subject Matter: Two-masted, single-funnel steamship. Flying blue flag, green cross with black swan at centre, from bow and aft masts. Is also on funnel. Funnel has black top, brown / bronze body. British Ensign, red with Union Jack. Port side showing. Belongs to Australind Steam Navigation - often referred to as the Hungry Goose Line - its ships nearly always carried names of W.A. towns. Carried migrants to Australia. Biography: "There is mention of this artist as a Greenwich man, but he seems more likely to be a Cardiff artist. A portrait of the clipper "Emanuele Accame" in a church at Montegrazie, Italy is signed T.G. Purvis, Cardiff. On back of canvas is "Alfred Freke, Fine Art Dealer, Cardiff". Two paintings of the "Stork" and "Discovery" are dated 1907 and 1911. Greenwich has a portrait of the barque "Norma" by Purvis and the National Museum of Wales, a portrait of the pilot of the "Marguerite". Active 1907 - 1911. Other: Steel single-screw schooner. Two decks and electric light. Built 1906, D & W Henderson & Co., Glasgow. Owners Australind Steam Shipping Co. Under Captain J.W.W. Yates from 1906.
