OIL PAINTING Steam Vessel "Bessie"

Inscriptions: Not signed or dated. "Bessie" on hull of ship. Chinese stamp on back of canvas in black ink, 2.8 cm square. Two characters in the centre and a border of classical key pattern. Note from George Trotter, stamp probably means "to hang". Subject Matter: Two-masted sailing vessel, Chinese junk and steamship in background. Other: Built 1873 Prince Edward Island. Brigantine 288 tons. Registered 12 February 1878 by John Bateman. She was a wreck lying at Lacepede Island but was repaired in 1889. November 7 sold to Daniel James Avery, a stock dealer of Perth. 12 April 1890 caught fire while lying in trades at Sourabaya, totally destroyed. Master was Captain Harrison.
