Norie`s Nautical Tables

H1992.74

Grey, fabric-covered book with spine taped in brown lettered "NORRIE'S NAUTICAL TABLES". Inside is stamped "S.S. MORETON BAY" and written on the flyleaf, "THESE TABLES WERE STAMPED S.S.MORETON BAY BY A SECOND OFFICER WITH "TAKING WAYS"", the signature is not decipherable. The tables are prefaced by an explanatory chapter. The book was published by Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson Ltd, London, in 1944. Used by Ronald Stuart McKenzie when he was Master Mariner on the steamship S.S MORETON BAY. The ship's usual route was between England and New Zealand but also carried troops in World War II. On one of these trips the ship was sunk by Japanese and McKenzie was taken as a prisoner of war and incarcerated at Mogadisushua on the east coast of Africa for the duration of the war. He retired from the sea and came from England to live in Perth in 1958 where he was employed as Secretary of the Royal Perth Golf Club. As the S.S Moreton was going down, McKenzie grabbed his binoculars and Norrie's Tables, the only things he salvaged. The book was treasured by him and was part of the baggage he brought to Perth when he emigrated.
