DRESS FORM KIT

Do-it-yourself dressmaker's dummy kit. Rectangular box, lid has picture of finished dummy alongside profile of female model. Banner down right hand side says 'A MODEL / OF YOU / THAT IS / REALLY / YOU' Below 'MODEL-YU / DRESS FORM / MAKES DRESSMAKING EASY'. Colours of light green, shades of brown on brown and cream back- ground. Box contains an instruction book, one roll of brown paper gummed tape supplied with kit, one wire handled bristle brush, and one bottle of 'MODEL-YU SHELLAC SOLUTION'. With the help of a friend the model maker would put on a stockingette slip over her underwear, stick the gummed tape all over it to the shape of her body. The form was then removed, reinforced, and covered with two coats of the shellac solution. A second provided slip of stockingette was then placed over the whole thing, it was mounted on a stand and was then ready to use as a faithful reproduction of the users figure. Label attached to front of box from Bairds Store is dated 28/11/42 for delivery to Mrs. McKenzie, Clayton St., East Fremantle. Baird's Mail Order Catalogue 1954/55 has advertisement for the Model-Yu on page 42. Price is 25/9d. so Bairds obviously carried the item for some years. Part of a large selection of objects collected from the house of Mr. & Mrs Osterberg when relatives came to finalise their estate. Contents of shellac bottle disposed of as inflammable.
