WATERCOLOUR "Barcoo"

Inscriptions: Not signed or dated. "Barcoo" appears on hull. Subject Matter: Single-funnel, two-masted steamship flying red ensign and flag upper and lower red triangle, left right blue triangle from aft mast and bow. Black funnel with double white strip. Other: In 1885 Queensland Steamship Co. ordered Barcoo. Used in river trade - although too long for some - 1887. Queensland Steamship Co. and Australasian Steam Navigation Co. merged to form Australasian United Steam Navigation Co. Barcoo used on Melbourne to Cooktown route, then extended to include Adelaide. 1895 abandoned route. 1895 used at times on W.A. route. In 1898 returned to Queensland mail service. 1906 out of service though still used. In 1911 became a hulk 1914 used by Royal Australian Navy as a coal hulk. 1924, 31 January towed to sea off Sydney and used for gun practice - sank. AUSN used Barcoo, Rockton, Waroonga and Bulimba on the W.A. route. In 1896 conscious of competition for speed, Barcoo was advertized as "The Greyhound". Part of competition with, for a time, Howard Smith against the Adelaide Steamship Co. Painted for Miss Carr's father, a member of the Fremantle City Council for many years.
