Inscriptions: Signed lower right corner: "Bourne / 06" Other - "FERRET" on hull of ship. Subject Matter: Steamship "Ferret". Biography: Active about 1897 to 1902 topographical artist. Arrived at Fremantle in the "Daylight" 16 August 1876. Resident at Esperance Bay 1897 and 1898 and in Albany about 1900 to 1902. See CH72.220. Other: Ferret was a single-screw, iron steamship built 1871 by J. & G. Thomson, Glasgow, with compound steam engine. Owners Highland Railway Co. registered Inverness, then stolen, thieves and vessel caught at Melbourne in November 1883. W. Whininham, November 1883 The Adelaide Steamship Co. Ltd, registered at Port Adelaide. 14 November 1920 wrecked at Reef Head, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. 1883 Adelaide Steamship Co. bought shipping operation and mail contracts from James Lilly & Co. was thus able to advertize services from Fremantle to Port Philip. Operation extended from Champion Bay to Albany. In 1910 an advertizement for the Southern Coast Mail Service. The Ferret sailed from Albany every Wednesday to either Israelite Bay, to Esperance or to Eucla and Eyre.
