Inscriptions: Two sets of Chinese (?) characters in lower right hand corner. "T.S.S. GASCOYNE" across centre bottom in white. Subject Matter: TSS Gascoyne, black hulled, single funnelled ship on seascape; land and white masted yachts on right hand horizon. Other: The 349.52 tonne single screw steam ship GASCOYNE (formerly SOUTHERN BREEZE), built by Bremer Vulkan, Germany in 1936 for the Southern Whaling and Sealing Company. The 41.76 metre long, steel-hulled ship had a triple expansion engine capable of 13 knots, and was designed and built as a whale catcher (from Sally May). The lifeboat from the GASCOYNE is in the Historic Boats collection.
